The TDG, Inc. Leadership SeriesSM, now in its 28th year, will be hosted October 1-2, 2012 by the First Division Museum at Cantigny Park in Wheaton, Illinois, part of the Robert R. McCormick Foundation.
This series was created for Forum graduates who want to continue their life long leadership learning. The focus here, by both presenting Organizations, chosen for their insights, services and experience, will provide a powerful background for this learning and growth. We’ll be covering all learning platforms providing a very high probability of permanent, desired change by all participants, with superb continual mentoring and networking.
This unique session will take advantage of the matchless resources at Cantigny to allow us to study, as a foundational background, the leadership contributions of Robert McCormick as well as the leadership challenges associated with the US Army’s 1st Infantry Division. Our speakers, seminars, break-out sessions, and museum tours have all been selected to address ten vital themes: Leadership over time in different roles, the ways in which technology forces organizational change and leadership changes, the challenge of imparting a leader’s legacy, developing leadership capacity in others, especially the 2nd generation of emerging candidates for leadership and the ever present needs today of deliberate speed and financial acumen. We are fortunate to have Paul Herbert, Executive Director, lead our discussion of Robert McCormick, and of very different but successful generals. Plus Hal Nelson, familiar to many LLF graduates, to help lead our study of the 1st Division in the Museum galleries and changes today in this country’s Military. Multiple graduates and current participants will share their review, insights, and experiences on the ten themes, throughout this specially designed Forum.
Any Forum graduate or LLF 2.1 member is invited to this refreshing/renewal experience at a deeply discounted rate of $900 versus the standard rate of $1,650.

“Transportable” Lessons – Cantigny to Current Organizational Situations
- Cross-Industry Field Trip using Military History—How to use in our professional lives.
- Leadership over several eras and in varying venues—a difficult challenge that we study in depth by considering Robert McCormick as well as other military leaders.
- Uneven growth to excellence, even with extensive preparation and persistence
- Multiple leadership styles: Can/should a leader change styles in different situations?
- Growing, picking, losing and removing leaders—all are difficult. What can we learn from the 1st Division’s experience?
- Leadership teams and how leaders influence one another in a team and or large organizations.
- Luck/circumstance vs. Preparation/planning and how leaders respond/adjust/innovate.
- Organizations are only people, but organizations have a culture & reputation (legacy even) that lives beyond the people and perhaps exists underneath, supporting the people.
- Adopting and resisting new things (technology, organizations, and leaders).
- Collaboration/teamwork and its requirements
- When do you respond to requests for help? At what price? When resist rather than respond?
- Many crises can be foreseen, but the predictive signals are often ignored. How does a leader determine when to act? How much data/input is necessary?
- Dealing well with inordinate pressure, inadequate training or resources, & insufficient time!
- One man’s possible impact or legacy, its breadth & length
- The value and difficulty of alignment of organizations collaborating
